It is recommended that you stick with the basic stitch and glue models, as they do not require building a frame. Smaller boats like Kayaks, dinghy, johnboats and rowboats are the best options for a novice. However, your own decision regarding what you require the boat for is important. It is still a good idea to start small and get to building bigger sails once you have the experience and the confidence. This boat building is a taxing activity requiring both persistence and skills. It also requires a great deal of organizing. Once you have decided on which boat to build and finalized the plans, the next task is to decide the timber and stock up the tools and accessories required. • Band and Chop Saw: These are needed for finer cutting and shaping of wood. Band saw especially is required for finer cuttings and curves required for the boat.
  

• Other items: Various other hardware like hammer, nails, clamps, brushes for polishing and painting are necessary to be bought beforehand.

Building your own boat is not a very expensive enterprise. Even though the tools mentioned above may look intimidating cost wise but most of this can be bought second hand. You should however be careful about the quality of blades etc. Once you have your plans and the tools ready, it is time to start with the work. Wooden boat building should not be taken as a dull routine and you can try to be creative with the work. Normally you should follow the plans for structure but some innovation is not just welcomed.
